... dream analysis workshop / dreamwork in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, quezon city, manila, philippines)

facilitating this workshop relived in me vivid memories of my wonderful stay in kerala, india way back in 2004.  why, you might ask?  well, in this workshop, participants were mostly indian nationals doing their graduate studies in clinical psychology.

as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, i always make sure to work on my clients' dreams whenever they're brought up.  dream analysis is sort of like a game for me, wherein i help my clients decode the personal meaning of their dreams.  i always get a kick out of witnessing their 'aha' moment as the meaning of their dream dawns on them.

as shown below, we did a lot of fun dreamwork activities:

by the way, i identify myself as a dream analyst and NOT a dream interpreter.  a dream interpreter interprets dreams for the dreamer.  a dream analyst, on the other hand, assists the dreamer in interpreting his/ her own dream.  a dream analyst therefore shuns dream dictionaries, knowing that each symbol in a dream has personal meaning which only the dreamer knows.

this dream analysis workshop ended with a cultural show which i so much enjoyed that it made me dream of going back to india someday, and hopefully, soon!

nighty night and sweet dreams everyone!

... tarot card psychotherapy in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, osteopath, quezon city, manila, philippines)

u.p. college of medicine students- hazel soriano and siblings nas and nass tillah, visited me for a session on tarot card psychotherapy.

just like the modern playing cards we use in playing pusoy dos or tong-its, tarot cards are a deck of playing cards which originated in Europe in the late middle ages (14th-15th centuries).  the original purpose of tarot cards is to play the italian card game called tarocchi, also known as tarok.

in the 18th century however, the tarot cards became popularly used for purposes of divination (i.e., foretelling the future) most probably because the cards contained intricate imagery which card readers could ascribe meaning to.

in tarot card psychotherapy, the cards are not used for divination but as help aids in making the client talk about the issues and concerns in his or her life.  it is the client who interprets the cards as the psychotherapist simply facilitates the process.  the tarot cards become especially useful when the client is able to emotionally connect with the images in the chosen tarot cards.

just like the rorschack inkblot test cards, using tarot cards is a projective technique wherein the client projects his thoughts and feelings onto the images of the cards, which are then explored in psychotherapy session.

The ultimate goal of tarot card psychotherapy is to help the client resolve inner struggles that serve as obstacles to personal growth and a joyful life.

... gestalt therapy growth group: sunog! sunog! ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, osteopath, quezon city, manila, philippines)

love nagpala and ronald miranda, both doctors-to-be from the u.p. college of medicine, dropped by for an experience of gestalt therapy.

the theme that emerged from today's growth activity was on "self-nurture and self-care."  many of the roles we play in life require us to take care of other people.  however, in putting the need of others ahead of ours, we place ourselves at the risk of burning out.

what comes to my mind is this verse in the bible which says, "love others as you love yourself."  it is a verse that implies self-love as a pre-requisite for loving others.  we simply cannot give what we do not have.  and we cannot fully give what we ourselves are deficient in.

just to put this "preaching" into practice, ronald and i decided to do cranio-sacral therapy on love nagpala, whose stream has run a little dry from helping others.  notice her delight as she gets recharged! :D

... gestalt therapy growth group activity: puno na punong-puno ng snakes ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist , quezon city, manila, philippines)

after a long while, i facilitated a gestalt growth group activity for some wonderful students from the u.p. college of medicine students- hadi mahammad-isa, sheryl manalili, kris mangunay, patricia nacienceno, and christine olivar.

in processing the growth group activity, a lot of themes came up.  of all the themes, what struck me the most was the theme about the "little snakes on the road."  these snakes are those little problems or challenges in life that I'm still able to run away from.

but then, at the dead end of the road i'm treading, I come face to face with this "tree full of snakes," and this time, there is no recourse but for me to confront what I've evaded and feared for so long.

what i love about gestalt therapy growth groups is that it enriches everyone.  i may play the role of facilitator, but i am as much a student of life as the participants in the group are.  so to hadi, sheryl, kris, patricia, and christine,  thank you so much for life lessons I've learned from you.

... craniosacral therapy (cst) in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, osteopath, quezon city, manila)

Today is a special day for me, having graduated from Jim Green's Craniosacral Therapy (CST) Practical Integration Course.

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle touch therapy, developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger.  CST uses very soft touch which weighs less than the 2004 edition of the Philippine peso (5.35 grams).  What CST does is to improve the functioning of the central nervous system- by releasing any restrictions which impede the smooth flow of cerebrospinal fluid protecting your brain and spinal cord.

CST stimulates the body’s natural healing ability and is good for a wide range of medical and psychiatric conditions, such as:

* Migraine headaches
Chronic neck and back pain
Scoliosis
Central nervous system disorders
Autism
Learning Disabilities
Emotional Difficulties
Depression
Anxiety and Panic Attacks
Stress and Tension-related Problems
Fibromyalgia
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Jim Green and me.  It was an honor to be taught by
the Albert Einstein of Craniosacral Therapy.

We had the privilege of being taught by Mr. Jim Green who provided us with such high quality instruction and supervision.  Even before the Upledger Institute was established, Jim Green was already receiving training and supervision directly from Dr. John Upledger himself.  In fact, Jim was the first CST practitioner to become certified by Dr. Upledger in techniques level certification.  In the 1990s, Jim taught more CST classes than Dr. Upledger did.  He not only had the enviable pleasure of working at the clinic alongside Dr. Upledger, but Jim and Dr. Upledger would trade CST sessions on each other on a regular basis.  These days, Jim Green with his wife Regina travels all over Europe, America, and Asia teaching CST.

My classmates and I rewarded Jim Green with the healthiest
of Pinoy food:  bulalo, chicharon, sisig, etc.  Next time he comes
back, we'll force feed him on a diet of IUD, betamax, adidas,
helmet, walkman, tokneneng, and kwek-kwek.

Thank you Jim for your generosity in sharing with us what you know, and for wanting us to become the best CST practitioners possible.

... color therapy (chromotherapy) and color psychology in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

matang lawin ("hawk eye") is a science-environmental tv show aired on abs-cbn and hosted by kim atienza. today, they interviewed me about color therapy.

color therapy, also known as chromotherapy is one of the modalities i use as an art therapist and holistic healer. color therapy is usually applied through

(1) the use of colored lenses on eyeglasses,
(2) exposure to lights of different colors, and
(3) visualization/mental imagery exercises.

as a certain color enters the eyes, it affects the hypothalamus, pineal gland, and pituitary gland, all of which govern and regulate hormonal production, which in turn creates cellular changes.

red for instance has been found to increase melatonin production at night by 70% and can also help people with autism. blue has the potential to help people with dyslexia (learning disorders) and dyskinesia (movement disorders).

as for the psychology of color, you can visit the very first post on my blog:

http://randydellosa.blogspot.com/2009/04/hmm-i-wonder-what-color-your-mood-is.html

life is good and so i wish to leave you this quote by danny kaye:

life is a great big canvas... and you should throw ALL the paint you can on it!

... reiki mawashi and dragon ball z energy blasts in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

"reiki" means "universal energy." "mawashi" means "round, revolve, current, or game."

"reiki mawashi" is the reiki practice of gathering in a circle, joining hands, and then sending energy to flow within the circle. it is usually done as a formal exercise for generating collective healing energy for the participants.

for today's group however, we did "reiki mawashi" as a fun game for developing a sensitive feel for energetic flow.

sometimes, "reiki mawashi" can generate a lot of energy which makes the group participants sway rhythmically from side to side.

not knowing what to do with the excess energy built up, we simply decided to blast our photographer with dragon ball z (dbz) energy balls.

hi doctors sam padre, alex pacheco, ronald miranda,
and pocholo morales! it was nice exchanging
good energy with you! :D

... pepito manaloto undergoes life coaching, acupuncture, and touch therapy ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
as a psychiatrist, i believe that my clients deserve more than a medical prescription. medications are certainly important and oftentimes necessary, but clients can be helped through natural and holistic ways too. i guess that's what motivated gma's pepito manaloto to visit me. in his quest for psychological and physical health, he visited my clinic for a 3-in-1 session of life coaching, acupuncture, and touch therapy.
.
life coaching is about helping people deal with their common life problems, teaching them necessary attitudes and life skills to overcome the problem, and assisting them to attain their higher goals.
.
acupuncture is the ancient chinese practice of inserting needles into the body to correct any energy flow imbalances, thereby facilitating recovery from illnesses.
.
touch therapy is a body-mind approach which uses light touch and gentle body manouvers to make suppressed and hidden emotions, images, and memories surface to the client's conscious mind.
.
pepito manaloto was indeed a character, and it was a hilarious experience having him and his friends around!
