... in-patient rehabilitation program for computer addiction in the philippines ... (life coach, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
apples jalandoni, field reporter of abs-cbn's "bandila," did an interview on the topic of "computer addiction." here's what i had to share: .
the computer has become a necessary tool of modern life. young people use it for their studies; adults use it for work; and anyone can use it for fun. like all good things however, computer use can be abused. anyone who uses the computer is at risk of getting addicted to it.
.
computer addiction refers to the compulsive or excessive use of computers such that one’s life revolves around it and it interferes with normal routines of daily living. it covers wide spectrum of behaviours which include playing video and online games, viewing internet pornography, being hooked to chat rooms, repetitively checking email, uncontrolled online gambling, continuously downloading music files, engaging in illicit affairs through the net, constantly watching online videos, and surfing the net for long hours.
.
computer addiction is characterized by (1) an obsession to use the computer, (2) a worsening of the obsession as time goes by, (3) persistence of the computer-related behaviour despite experiencing the negative consequences, and (4) loss of self-control.
.
computer addiction has many negative effects: mood swings, withdrawal from family and friends, sleep deprivation, poor eating habits, poor hygiene, wrist injury, back and neck aches, poor grades, stealing, lying, poor attention span in school or at work, absenteeism or tardiness, and a breakdown of relationships. as the computer addiction progresses, it creates personality changes which deteriorate over time, ultimately ruining all aspects of the computer addict’s life.
.
a common mistake in the treatment of computer addicts is to bring them to a doctor who just relies on medications or to make them undergo the same rehabilitation program for alcoholics and substance dependents. a good rehab program should address the unique issues and specific needs of computer addicts.
.
Life Change Recovery Center is a psychological therapy center with a short-term in-house program for overcoming computer addiciton. at Life Change, the computer addict is empowered to quit his computer obsession for goo. the program emphasizes values formation, personality development, and spiritual growth. personalized care, in-depth counseling, and family therapy are all part of the program. most importantly, confidentiality and compassion are guaranteed.

... stress management and meditation in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
Meditate to de-stress
The wonders of MEDITATION
.
For most of us, our days are always hectic, bursting with sensory overload, mental challenges, and problematic relationships. Learning relaxation techniques has helped some people cope. But many more are not sold on meditation as a coping mechanism, believing it only adds to the already tottering skyscraper of daily life's burdens.
.
Not so, says clinical psychologist and psychiatrist Dr. Randy Dellosa, of the Randy Dellosa Wellness Center in Quezon City. Meditation has proven holistic health benefits affecting the whole person - body, mind, emotion, and spirit. This is why, Dr. Dellosa says it is recommended not only by spiritual teachers, but also by physicians and mental health professionals.
.
In Dr. Dellosa's practice, he has found that many people are now taking up meditation to improve their lives. "Some meditate to de-stress, relax, and rejuvenate. Others do it for personal growth. And many meditate for their own spiritual purposes. Meditation disciplines both body and mind. It is a practice based on mental focus, awareness, and mindfulness."
.
Learn to Meditate
.
For the novice meditator, Dr. Dellosa advises finding a form of meditation the suits your purpose and personality. You can learn to meditate from different sources: Traning can be provided by books, videos, or teachers or school.
.
Ideally, aspiring meditators should get a qualified expert to teach them the proper body and mental mechanics of meditative practice. "Without a teacher or school, meditation can be done incorrectly, resulting in physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual dysfunction," notes Dr. Dellosa.
.
After learning the right way to meditate, people who just want stress relief and relaxation can start doing it on their own. "However, long-term guidance and supervision from a teacher or school is required for those on a spiritual quest or want to develop their human potential," the doctor adds.

Randy Dellosa helps kids fight computer addiction.

MANILA, Philippines – The computer may have made life easier and tasks faster. But like all good things, it can be abused and lead to addiction in children, teenagers and adults.

They can be so obsessed with computers they no longer have room for ordinary routines in daily life. Computer addicts run the gamut of video and online game players, viewers of Internet pornography, people in chat rooms, those who always check their email, download music files, engage in illicit affairs through the Net, online gamblers and others.

Computer addiction brings mood swings, withdrawal from family and friends, sleep deprivation, poor eating habits and hygiene, wrist injury, back and neck aches, low grades, stealing, lying, poor attention span in school or at work, absenteeism, tardiness and a breakdown in relationships. Left unchecked, computer addiction can ruin the addict’s life.

Psychiatrist and expert on computer addiction Dr. Randy Dellosa says one can overcome computer addiction in children by encouraging them to have other interests and social activities; setting limits on computer use and understanding that the child might have underlying emotional problems which make him escape through computer addiction.

Dellosa holds office at the Life Change Recovery Center, a psychological therapy center with a short-term in-house program for overcoming computer addiction. Its telephone numbers are 415-6529 or 415-7964.

... clinical body therapy for the back, neck, shoulders, abdomen, buttocks, and legs ... (philippines, life coach, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
one reason i enjoy doing body therapy is that it's a break from the mentally-taxing work i do as a psychotherapist. when i do body therapy, i'm not thinking as much, yet i still get the privilege of helping clients relieve their stresses. as my clients relax, i get relaxed myself, especially with the aroma of mentholated oil which i use.
.
since my goal is to help my clients in the best way possible, it's important for me to be updated with new knowledge and techniques. and that's why i'm always thankful whenever thomas zudrell visits the philippines. he is a true mentor and dedicated trainor who never tires of refining the skills of his students.
.from the pictures, you'll see that not only does he supervise his students one-on-one, thomas also allows us to practice on him! as always, thanks a lot, thomas!

... scandal after scandal after scandal ... (philippines, life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
right after gma's ivan mayrina visited came tanya jamon. working for abs-cbn's failon ngayon, tanya narrated to me a story that should make ladies beware.
.
she told me about tintin who sent her self-shot naked pictures to her boyfriend upon his request. after giving him around 6 pictures, he still demanded more. tintin then decided to break up with the guy and shortly after, the guy published her naked pictures on the net.
.
in my talk with tintin, she told me that she had moved on and wasn't that bothered anymore. in fact, she said that her mother and friends were more worried about the issue than she was. tintin reasoned that if katrina halili survived her much-publicized scandal, she could too.
.
true, katrina and tintin are victims and i feel sorry for them. however, they also placed themselves in compromising situations which they could otherwise have avoided. i just hope that both of them learn their lessons well.

... testosterone and sexual aggression in males ... (philippines, life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
it was a dark gloomy rainy afternoon when ivan mayrina, one of the regular anchors of gma news live, consulted me on the most recent survey on happiness.
.
"why," he asked, "is sex more important for men's happiness than women's?"
.
in a nutshell, i explained to him that men's horniness has to do with the barrels of testosterone contained in their bodies. men possess an inborn and insatiable need for sex due to testosterone which not only makes them sexually obsessed but more so, sexually aggressive!

... a very close encounter of a very third kind ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, philippines)

.
it’s been quite a while since i profiled an interesting character worthy of being featured on my blog. so it’s a good thing to have chanced upon john roque, a friend of mine, who intimated to me an experience that shook his world. yup, you guessed it (or did you?)! he had a true-to-life encounter with a UFO!
.
in brief, his story goes like this: one early evening, in a subdivision in pila, laguna, he was standing at a busy sidewalk with his mom and brother. far away in the sky, the three of them spotted a red flickering light. at first, they were willing to dismiss it as just one of those red lights on tall towers which warn low flying aircrafts to take caution.
.
all of a sudden however, they saw the red flickering light dance and change into different colors. soon, the dancing lights became recognizable as an object which was slowly flying towards them. in a few seconds, the unidentified flying object hovered above them and as they gazed at it, they shook in both amazement and terror. at that moment, it seemed like time stood still for them (a “time warp,” he says). the road changed in appearance into a greyish sepia-like color and it seemed that no one else was there but the three of them.
.
asked to describe what the spacecraft looked like, john mentioned that it was massive- the size of many football fields. rather than looking like a solid vehicle, it looked gaseous with dancing orange flames. It had numerous small portals yet the shape of the spacecraft was undefined. after a few seconds, the spacecraft whizzed through the air and suddenly disappeared.
.
john, his brother, and his mom were left awestruck and dumbfounded. they regained awareness of their environment which was exactly the way it was before they sighted and experienced the UFO.
.
in the months that followed, john noticed a strange phenomenon in himself. he was giving off sparks from his fingertips especially when he touched things. whenever this happened, it was so painful that he had to wrap his hands in towels to prevent the sparks. over a period of months, the sparks disappeared.
.

since then, john gained a strong consciousness that extra-terrestrial beings are just around the corner. he dreads the thought that someday, another UFO encounter might take place and fears that they may do something terrible to him. the experience has also left john with a sense of isolation since people simply scoff at and dismiss his story.
.
there! wasn’t that interesting?
.

john’s story left me in deep reflective mode.
.
pondering over the possibility of extra-terrestrial life has raised in me a lot of difficult questions about God and about the purpose and meaning of life in general.

... bruxism and stress management in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
gma's pinoy md tv show did a segment on nocturnal bruxism, characterized by teeth grinding and teeth clenching during sleep.
.
if not due to dental problems, then it most likely is a heredo-familial disorder, which means that it's passed on in the genes. stress, whether it be emotional, physical, or mental stress, is believed to intensify the teeth grinding. at extremes, it can damage teeth and cause jaw aches. furthermore, the loud grinding and clicking sounds produced from teeth grinding can awaken and disturb other people's sleep.
.
treatment consists of dental intervention, the wearing of mouth guards, stress management and relaxation techniques, and counseling for emotional problems.
