... balancing uneven leg lengths in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.

when i do body therapy on my clients, it becomes noticeable that some of them have uneven leg lengths, that is, one leg seems shorter than the other.

.

the leg can actually be shorter than the other because of a congenital malformation, such as a club foot, or some previous fracture which shortened the leg as it healed. this physical shortening is called an "anatomical short leg."

.

on the other hand, an "apparent short leg" is due to a twisting or torsion of the pelvis wherein one side of the pelvis tips more forward than the other. a torsion in the pelvis does not only cause a seemingly short leg. it can also cause scoliosis and pain in the joints of the hips, knees, and ankles.

.

when tommy, danny, chuck, miko, nikki (medical students from u.p college of medicine) and dentists mao and joanne visited me at my wellness center, i gave them the opportunity to learn how to correct or balance uneven leg lengths.

.

some techniques which I taught them included the "hip torque," "horizontal knee bends," "leg traction with vibration," and the "frog leg stretch." all these techniques are meant to balance an apparent short leg.

.

another method which i encouraged them to learn is the dorn method. the dorn method is a gentle spine alignment and leg length balancing therapy which originated from germany. the method was introduced to the philippines by the german holistic healer Thomas Zudrell, who in reality is a certified filipino at heart. once in a while, he visits the philippines to teach people the dorn method.
.

i hope that tommy, danny, mao, joanne, chuck, miko, and nikki practice their newly-learned skills of leg-length balancing. it actually is amazing to see uneven leg lengths be corrected in a matter of just a few minutes.

... kundalini yoga in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.

kundalini yoga is an ancient form of yoga that focuses on the spine. practitioners of kundalini yoga believe that youth is determined by the flexibility of the spine, and that a flexible spine is necessary for maintaining a healthy body. hence, the focus of kundalini yoga is on exercises, stretches, and postures that help keep the back muscles and spine flexible and strong. it's become my routine to do a set of kundalini yoga exercises every morning. the exercises make me feel calm, centered, yet energized to face the day's challenges.

.

margaret de castro, a niece of mine who is on vacation in the philippines, works for NASA as an operations research analyst and is also a yoga enthusiast. one morning, seeing me do my kundalini yoga moves, she was kind enough to give me instruction on how to improve the movements. here she is telling me to keep my elbows up as i do the basic spinal twist.

.

filipinos will easily relate to the spinal flex and the cat-cow exercises. filipinos unknowingly practice kundalini yoga when they do the “otso-otso” dance moves (see illustrations below). in fact, even the "spaghetting pababa, spaghetting pataas" move is similar to the spinal grind exercise of kundalini yoga. no wonder it’s easy for filipinos to keep young and flexible.

.

as for margaret, for helping me stretch my spine, i treated her out to dinner, the cost of which was ...mmm... an added stretch on my budget! (joke- hehe!)

... clinical body therapy for the back, neck, shoulders, abdomen, buttocks, and legs ... (philippines, life coach, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
one reason i enjoy doing body therapy is that it's a break from the mentally-taxing work i do as a psychotherapist. when i do body therapy, i'm not thinking as much, yet i still get the privilege of helping clients relieve their stresses. as my clients relax, i get relaxed myself, especially with the aroma of mentholated oil which i use.
.
since my goal is to help my clients in the best way possible, it's important for me to be updated with new knowledge and techniques. and that's why i'm always thankful whenever thomas zudrell visits the philippines. he is a true mentor and dedicated trainor who never tires of refining the skills of his students.
.from the pictures, you'll see that not only does he supervise his students one-on-one, thomas also allows us to practice on him! as always, thanks a lot, thomas!

... spine alignment therapy, deep tissue massage, and trigger point therapy in the philippines ... (life coach, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
dorn method is a body therapy which uses gentle manual manipulations to keep the spine aligned and healthy. misalignments in the spine can cause muscular pain, nerve impingements, and other illnesses.
.
fresh from germany, thomas zudrell visited the philippines again to share new concepts and methods in dorn method. with the advancement in theories and the integration of new techniques, he describes dorn method as a "myo-neuro-structural rebalancing therapy." simply put, dorn method works on the muscles, nerves, and body alignment.
.
one principle which thomas drilled deep into our minds is that we, as dorn method practioners, are never the healers. we are only facilitators of healing, preparing the client's body to heal on its own.

... deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
of all the body therapies that i do, deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy are the ones mostly sought after by my clients who are athletes, dancers, theatre artists, and other professionals who use their body musculature intensively.
.deep tissue massage is not the same as "hard massage" which, for Filipinos, essentially means a strong and painful massage. deep tissue massage is a clinical body therapy which consists of slow massage strokes and attempts to reach the deeper muscular tissues. there can be mild to moderate discomfort or pain especially when the tight muscles are being worked on.
.
trigger point therapy is another clinical therapy which involves the application of pressure on tender muscle tissue called trigger points. when trigger points are pressed, they refer pain and tenderness to a different area of the body.
.
the goals of both deep tissue massage and trigger point are to loosen muscles, alleviate pain, and increase mobility. after the massage, there can be a day or two of soreness, just like how you would feel after a rigorous work-out at the gym or after playing sports.
.
done regularly, deep tissue and trigger point therapy are two body therapies that bring about deep muscle conditioning and healing.

... gua sha therapy ... (philippines, life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
i met up with a chinese master healer who gave me a gua sha treatment. gua sha is a type of healing technique which involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged instrument. little did i know that the treatment would leave my back looking like this:
.gua sha, according to traditional chinese medicine, is supposed to promote normal blood circulation and remove any blood stagnation. well, at some moment during the treatment, it really did feel like i was bleeding profusely as the master was was lustily scraping the skin off my back. for the most part however, the treatment felt just like an ordinary massage. after everything was done, despite looking like a vicious wildcat had just pounced on me, the master assured me that the marks etched on my back would disappear in 2-3 days.
.
you know what? surprisingly, whatever back pain i had before the treatment totally disappeared!

... self-care through chiropractic medicine ... (philippines, life coach, counselor, psychotherapy, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
as a practitioner of the dorn method of spine alignment, i'm very aware that we should take care of our spine. all the body's tissues and organs are in some way connected to the spine and any misalignment in the spine may cause pain, disease, or musculoskeletal abnormalities.
..
the dorn method, which is very gentle, is often contrasted with chiropractic medicine which uses sudden jerky manipulations. nevertheless, i still wanted to experience chiropractic medicine for whatever it was worth.
..
it was just my luck to pass by essencia (a medical-dental-chiropractic spa center located at the corner of tomas morato and scout madrinan in quezon city).
..
i got to meet the proprietor of essencia, dr. rico castro, and chiropractic doctor, ben adorable. i found out that the u.s. trained dr. ben serves as the alaska acers' official chiropractor.
.
as soon as i got on his chiropractic table, dr. adorable started assessing my spine and neck. he then began the spinal manipulations which consisted of jerky twists on my neck and downward thrusts on my mid-spine. a lot of incredibly audible cracking sounds were produced from my neck and spine. all throughout the session, vivid images of steven segal fracturing his opponents' necks streamed through my mind!
.
at the end of the manipulations, i was rather amused and couldn't keep myself from smiling... perhaps from the fact that i was still alive!
.
but seriously, i felt looser and lighter after the session.
.
chiropractic treatments will certainly be part of my regular self-care regimen from now on.. and yes, (at the risk of sounding queer) because he allowed me to live (hehe!), i find dr. ben adorable STILL adorable!

... the dorn method for spine alignment and leg length balancing ... (philippines, life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

.
since the start of this year, i've been in charge of the wellness program of a number of athletes. despite their scientific gym workouts and superior body conditioning, many of these athletes exhibit spinal misalignments and marked differences in their leg lengths. no wonder then that their common complaints include shoulder aches, backaches, leg pain, and bad posture. one of the therapies proven to be helpful for them is the dorn method.
.
the dorn method is a type of back therapy which is painless, gentle, and safe. it was developed in germany by dieter dorn, who successfully helped thousands of people heal from their health problems. dorn therapy was introduced to the philippines by another german named thomas zudrell. thomas learned the dorn method directly from dieter dorn and dorn's first students. i, in turn, learned dorn therapy from thomas.
.
last saturday, i was again privileged to hone my skills under the watchful supervision of thomas.
.
in this workshop, the participants were given a lot of opportunities to practice dorn therapy skills on each other. of course, i enjoyed being on the receiving end in our practice sessions- hehe!
.
thanks thomas for sharing to the philippines the healing art of the dorn method. it's not only dorn therapy skills that we learn from you, but we also imbibe your attitudes and spirit as a true holistic healer.
